"Celebrated music professor David Whealy from the University of California Davis becomes the recipient of an unexpected inheritance from a complete stranger on the opposite side of the country. As David explores the secrets of his mysterious benefactor, James Burton West, he finds more than just a remodeled home on the Delaware coast.

Through the journals and correspondence West leaves behind, David embarks on a journey of discovery that takes him deeper into the world of an intensely private and humble man who went through the last years of his life alone. And off the grid.

Also waiting for David to discover is the promised treasure trove of original and unpublished autograph scores, the quality and quantity of which would rival that of the great composers.

West knew precious little about his estate that had been in continuous family hands since 1724. He knew nothing about his enigmatic ancestor, a Thomas of "historic import," nor the origins of that ancient iron key. A key that held a secret even James Burton West remained ignorant of to his death.

A secret which may well have redrawn the map of the United States."

I enjoyed this book and would suggest it to readers that enjoy history & music.

The combination of music, history and a touch of romance was woven together skillfully. My favorite part was the description of the music. No, it's more than the description; it's the way the music brought the book to life. Whether it be the sense of discovery of the works of a heretofore unknown composer, to the personal exploration of that music, DeStefano captures the emotion, intricacy and lyricism of those parts of the story. Especially entrancing were the sections where Carla imagines the music she is reading off a score. The author creates a sense of magic and emotion in those passages that draw the reader in.

I also found the portrayal of the world of academic musical programs intriguing. I have only come to love classical music in the last few decades, so I have zero experience or insight into that setting and really found it mesmerizing.

Discovery is one of the main themes of this book, and the author manages that theme skillfully. The discovery of the music of West, the discovery of the history of Delaware and Pennsylvania and the discovery of the relationships between Carla, David and Beth. It just works.

One challenge of this story is the point of view. It is written in omniscient third person. At first, I thought the author had just lost track of the point of view, but within a few pages I realized he'd made a conscious decision to pursue this approach. Now, some readers may find this off-putting. In modern writing the predominant point of views are third person and first person. For many years second person and this omniscient third person have been unpopular. I would put forth that readers today are mostly out of practice in reading this style of storytelling. While I was able to become more comfortable with this, it did jar me out of immersion a few times.

Another issue was related to this. I've always felt that the omniscient narrator is hard to manage because it really leaves open a path to 'telling, not showing." The temptation to fall into a more folktale style of writing is difficult to resist. The author struggles with this in a few places understandably, but nowhere near as often as one might expect.

The book was technically rather clean--the typos were few and far between. Clearly the author paid great attention to detail.

Overall, this book proved to be an interesting read. I will definitely check out this author's next work.

I love this book, it is well written, the characters really come alive for the reader as you get carried away on the Journey with David Whealy. I am looking forward to a sequel. Anyone who loves music and adventure, this is the book for you...
The Composer's Legacy delivers on so many levels. If you love a mystery, history, romance and music this book is for you. I love a good mystery, like the Davinci Code, this book also gives you the same desire to find out what is going to happen next where you can't put it down. I may not be musically talent but can appreciate those who are. I found that the musical references provided a deeper emotional connection to the characters and the story as it unfolded. I look forward to being entertained with another sequel to this book.
An intricate, well-informed fictional account of a west-coast professor of music researching historical records of the colonial era to identify the lineage of his benefactor, a stranger from whom he has inherited not only a home and its contents on the east coast but also a body of musical compositions, which turn out to be exceedingly valuable. A link to online recordings allows the reader access to actual musical works composed by the author. Cleverly negotiating terrain of various types--the academy, music, and history—DeStefano covers also a broad swath of romance among the characters and a bit of the esoteric in Asian language and culture. A mystery worth following to its resolution. Gay Claiborne, Ph.D.
for a new author- I found the story to be interesting and eclectic. It is very well written. Even if you do not have a background in "music" the descriptive way the author has of introducing an intricate story line, and a dash of (well- researched) history of the state of Delaware- worked well together. I "felt" the music, enjoyed the intrigue, and the way everything came together at the end!! Hope he writes another.
The Composer's Legacy was a refreshing deviation from my normal daily reading and really spoke to my love of history. Music connoisseurs will appreciate the incredibly detailed descriptions of compositions and orchestras, but I was pulled in by the historical mystery. I have a soft spot for digging through old archives for lost gems of information and especially for America's colonial period.

The pacing reminded me of listening to NPR. If you are looking for something with a fast pace and a lot of action this book may not be for you, but if you enjoy rich, quality content and an intellectual reward for sticking around The Composer's Legacy is a great choice for your to-read shelf.
THE COMPOSER'S LEGACY... very descriptive with a well-rounded ending, Michael DeStefano brings the reader into a world where many of us have never been. He offers real-time historical facts (highly educational) while employing fictional characters--from his creative imagination--to play the parts in one of the Classiest Novels I've ever read. The Composer's Legacy feels like a movie--at least it did to me--about someone very determined (David) the main character, who uses intellectual common sense, kindness and polite behavior to get the assistance he needs to resolve a mysterious mystery that happens to involve him. Without giving too much away, David's musical talent in the classical genre, and his ability to draw the attention of an Unknown equally talented soul--deceased--and bring the Unknown back to life through the Unknown's music, is truly a wonderful plot-piece that anyone can appreciate. It was very emotional for me. I hope I haven't given too much away, but just know that this book--if you enjoy involved novels--will entertain you in a very realistic way--even though it's fiction. It's a job well done by Michael DeStefano, written extremely well, easy-to-follow dialogue, places, and times, all the way to the end. In my opinion, this novel can't be anything less than FIVE STARS! ... Thanks, Michael. (Author Brenda Chaput)
