Night Corridor Joan Hall Hovey Books

After nine years in Bayshore mental institution, once called the lunatic asylum, Caroline Hill is finally being released. There will be no one to meet her. Her parents who brought her here…are dead. They have found her a room in a rooming house, a job washing dishes in a restaurant. She will do fine, they said. But no one told her that women in St. Simeon are already dying at the hands of a vicious predator. One, an actress who lived previously in her building. And others. And now, as Caroline struggles to survive on the outside, she realizes someone is stalking her. But who will believe her? She's a crazy woman after all. Then, one cold winter's night on her way home from her job, a man follows and is about to assault her when a stranger intercedes. A stranger who hides his face and whispers her name. Praise for Joan Hall Hovey's suspense. "... Joan Hall Hovey has penned as good a thriller as I have ever read...a superb tale of terror and suspense that puts her right up there with the likes of Sandford and Patterson..."Ingrid Taylor for Small Press Review
Night Corridor Joan Hall Hovey Books
Double check the locks on your doors, make sure the phone is working, and keep something besides a nightlight shining to ensure there is nothing lurking in the darkened corners!Caroline Hill is only 26 years old; however, she has experienced more betrayal, heartbreak, anger, fear, and abuse than most people who live to be a ripe old age, ever experience. She is being released from a mental hospital after nine long years of having others take care of her, make decisions for her and provide a safe environment for her needs. At first she appears afraid, unsure of her own capabilities; however, she soon begins to overcome the obstacles in her path. She slowly makes a few friends, is promoted from being a dishwasher to waitress in her first ever paying job, and has hopes of achieving greater aspirations for herself. She sets new goals for herself and begins to tackle them successfully.
There have been murders in her neighborhood, and she is warned to keep her door locked, and be aware of her surroundings. There is a serial killer lurking somewhere. Is he someone that Caroline has just met? Is he a stranger? What does any of this have to do with Caroline?
The story immediately grabbed my attention and held on tight. This is a good storyline, and a page turning psychological thriller. The story is a bit chilling, and I had imaginary goosebumps, and at times I could almost feel my hair standing at attention. The characters are well-developed with identifying personality traits. The pace is fairly fast, but there is a lot of detail that is not necessarily conducive to the plot. It does; however, add mental imagery that sorta' makes the reader feel that they are actually watching the events unfold. The ending seems a bit abrupt, but it was satisfying.
There were some unnecessary irritations from lack of good editing that were somewhat disruptive to my smooth reading pleasure. The misuse of words such as then instead of than, and the extra words that seemed compatible with the author changing her mind and forgetting to hit the delete key! This would have been a five star review if it were not for those nuisances. Overall, this was a rather suspenseful tale that I would recommend to mystery fans that like lots of suspense, numerous suspects, and some murders to solve without huge amounts of blood and gore oozing everywhere.

Night Corridor Joan Hall Hovey Books Reviews
I loved this book and stayed up all night reading it! The characters were so well-drawn that I could almost hear them breathing, see them laughing, feel their emotions. It's rare that I feel like I KNOW the characters THAT well, but I did here, in THIS book - especially the main character, Caroline, but also the minor characters - every one of them! I could see and hear Caroline, almost feel her breath on my skin. The writing and the plot drew me in, from page one. I was fully engaged and up all night, reading and enjoying this book, to the very last word.
The suspense built slowly, but steadily. The pace of the story never dragged, with increasingly building tension. I was rooting for Caroline the whole way. I feared for her, admired her, enjoyed getting to know her and watch her grow. I have a background in mental health/mental retardation and worked with "mental health/mental retardation hospitals" before and during the movement (communitization) to have the hospital residents live in the community, not locked away, isolated from the world. Caroline's release from the hospital and how she adapted to her new, free, and sometimes scary life in the outside world felt real. I liked and admired her ability to adapt and grow. I was guessing which character would be the villain - even the minor characters felt real, visible, so there were a couple of possibilities.
This was a great read. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author, Joan Hall Hovey!
Even with the lack of good editing, I'm glad I found this book and author. This is a story I don't think I will soon forget. The author is wonderful at getting the reader to envision the scenes and understand the characters, all without being too wordy about it. I would have given the book 5 stars, if it weren't for the lack of editing. It appeared to me that this was a rough draft, because there were so many sentences that it seemed she started one way and then changed her mind, but forgot to delete the part that had been changed. There were also a couple of places where she was inconsistent in wording. For instance, the main cop's name was Tom O'Neil in the beginning of the book, but a few chapters later, she called him Tom O'Leary. Then it was back to Tom O'Neil. Also, the get away car was a dark grey Mustang, but became a dark green Mustang, and then back to dark grey. Those two editing errors were the only ones that were distracting to me, causing me to page back and double check them. I almost gave the book only 3 stars because of them, but by the end of the book, I just couldn't stay with 3 stars, because I was so impressed by the story itself and the author's way of telling it, which engrossed me.
I almost feel like not reading one and two stars reviews anymore, because those reviewers many times present books totally wrong. For instance, on this book, one reviewer said they quit reading, because they'd figured out who the murderer was just a few chapters in. I almost fell into that trap too, but wasn't about to stop reading, and sure enough, it didn't turn out to be him at all.
Don't be fooled by bad reviews - some people just assume too much and are too impatient to see things through.
